High school is hell for walking nerd cliché Jerry Staute. Jerry’s always known that he doesn't fit into the backward rural region in which he lives. What he doesn’t know is that his home county is presently one of the most violent and criminal in the entire nation.

Now, in this raging anarchy that serves as a rite of passage for local teens, he's appalled to learn things are getting worse rather than better, as the rampant bullying and gang violence of his previous school years are now reaching their full maiming and murder potential.

Compared to most of his classmates, Jerry is an intellectual, and a voracious reader of everything from comic books to novels and encyclopedias. All that reading makes him idealistic, and perhaps unreasonably courageous. For he knows of many heroes, both fictional and not, who won against scary adversaries; and when they did, they changed the world.

So he too fights for justice, both for himself and others. But the resounding success of his literary heroes eludes him, even as the mental and physical toll on him mounts.

As if he didn’t already have enough to deal with, Jerry also finds himself in the throes of a hopeless crush, on the beautiful cheerleader he sits next to in Health class. And so he begins to learn the meaning of anguish, first hand.

Then one day, Jerry gets his very first car. And slowly but surely, things begin to change…

...To the good ol' days of low gas prices, raging hormones, and automotive mayhem. Well, gas prices weren't as low during my youth, but they were super-cheap compared to now.

I initially picked this up because it looked like a perfect book for a gearhead. Indeed, there was more car content than in any novel published since the 1960s, but I was surprised at how I was grabbed by the teenage boy-girl drama. Something about Jerry and Dana, in particular, touched me. I hope she does come back into the picture, once Jerry's crush on Sue Ann is out of his system.

Jerry, our hero, has a heart of gold, a country boy's resourcefulness, and a red-blooded American male's lust for speed and adventure. The Shadowfast books are actually memoirs with the names changed, according to the author, and I believe it. It all rings true to me. And the quality of the prose is higher than you'll find in most indie books, though the periodic "Agh!" and other exclamations in the narrative did begin to grate after a while.

But these are engaging stories--entertaining and sometimes heartwarming. I could have easily finished this one in one sitting if I'd had the time.

Sirens The Shadowfast Supercar Driver Logs Book 1 edition by James Mooneyham Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Great stories about the adventures of a southern boy and his superfast street car. As a gal, I enjoyed reading about the relationships and romantic goings-on between the guys and the girls in the "good old days" of high school. Although set in the 70s, this book reminded me of my own youth growing up in the 80s.
Wow - This book has it all - fast cars, drama, crime, humor, beautiful girls and, did I mention fast cars? Mooneyham's Jerry Statue is a great character - a little James Bond, a dash of McGyver, some Junior Johnson and a lot of genuine nice guy.

This story is one many of us can relate to - high school love, fixing up our cars and becoming a hero when the chips are down. The technical details of the cars is great reading by itself - Statue's 1970 Mach One Mustang, Shadowfast, is the car we all wanted while growing up.

It's just darn fun to sit down and read Mooneyham's Sirens - in so many pleasant ways, it's like watching film clips of many of our own high school adventures.
The story starts out good and then loses its way. It ends up being a memoir of building cars. The romance is very little of the story. The next two are even worse and never mention the girls at all. If I wanted a car building manual I would have bought one. Romance? Not here.
